Responsible Forestry
Responsible Forestry programs manage our forests in ways that preserve biological diversity and prevent deforestation. They work to sustain and enhance the economic health and lives of those living and working within the forest environment. The three non-profit programs involved in this type of work across the globe are: Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC), Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification™ (PEFC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI).
Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC)
The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) is a global not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of responsible forest management worldwide. It defines standards of responsible forest stewardship that are supported by environmental, social, and economic stakeholders, taking care of both the forests and the people and wildlife that call them home. Our suppliers hold FSC chain of custody certification with individual products bearing one of several FSC labels:
- FSC Mix. When this label is seen on a product it means the wood and paper included in the product comes from a mix of FSC certified forests, recycled materials, and/or FSC controlled wood.
- FSC 100%. FSC 100%. When this label is seen on a product it means the wood, paper and/or non-timber forest product is sourced from FSC certified forests.
- FSC Recycled. When this label is seen on a product it means the wood and/or paper included in the product is verified as recycled content.

Cork comes from the bark of the cork oak tree (species: Quercus Suber), found primarily in Southwest Europe and Northwest Africa. The bark can be stripped and harvested without damaging the trees, enabling each tree to regenerate every 9-12 years and harvested an average 15 times during its lifetime. Cork’s cellular composition makes it naturally resistant to moisture, pressure, and heat, making it a valuable material in the home and wine industry. Hundreds of thousands hectares of cork oak forests are being managed for ecological and economic sustainability and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) and/or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification™ (PEFC). Products containing cork harvested from those forests are highlighted.
