A lagniappe (pronounced LAN-yap) is a small gift given by a merchant at the time a customer purchases something. An example of a lagniappe (the word is traced to Cajun or Creole French origins) is the “baker’s dozen” 13th doughnut (and who doesn’t like that!?).
You can put some lagniappe-inspired power into your marketing efforts to create loyal customers who keep coming back for more. Here are four examples of the lagniappe idea and how you can use a small, unexpected gesture to build long-lasting customer relationships: |

Keep those cards and letters coming. When a customer or prospect visits your business (either in person or online), the ball’s in your court. Keep them coming back with a greeting card such as a thank-you card, a birthday or anniversary card, and/or a small gift. Send a coupon with a logo'd note pad, jar opener, balloon or another fun item with the card. Your recipients will be impressed and you’ve delivered that little something extra. Now watch that seed grow!

Listen carefully for ways to make a connection. As you chat with customers, listen for those little things that tell you more about them – things like personal interests, hobbies, family and milestones. This will allow you to look for ways to select imprinted products that can be used through the course of the relationship to let them know you’re thinking of them – and that you really took the time to listen to them (and who doesn’t appreciate that!?). Photo frames for family photos or vacation pictures (magnetic versions with your logo are inexpensive and can be mailed!) or sports schedules (with your logo) for a sports enthusiast all offer, opportunities to touch base and add that ‘little something extra’. |

Create a relaxing atmosphere. Is your showroom or customer waiting area a clean, attractive and fun place to be? Is the furniture comfortable? If there is a wait, is the reading material current and in good shape? What about refreshments? Refreshments are also a great idea if you’d like customers to linger as they shop or browse. A cup of coffee or tea in a mug with your imprint is warm and inviting and the mug makes a nice ‘little something extra’ for them to take home!

A little something extra can make a big impression. Clip a complimentary pen with your message to their receipt and say, “Thank you. We really appreciate your business.” Keep a supply of logo'd compact umbrellas handy for customers who are facing a rainy day with no raincoat. Keep your front-counter candy dish well-stocked with logo'd candies. Coloring books and crayons (both imprinted with your business name) are always welcome gifts when kids visit. Their parents will remember the kindness you extended! |
